This guide is the foundation of everything we publish. Before discussing filtration systems, mineral balance, or storage methods, it helps to understand the source itself — because every water decision that follows depends on where the water began.

Groundwater vs. Surface Water

Groundwater passes through layers of rock, sand, and clay, absorbing natural minerals like calcium and magnesium. Surface water from lakes and rivers is more susceptible to seasonal runoffs and requires targeted carbon filtration.

The two sources also differ in how they behave across seasons. Groundwater is remarkably stable — its mineral profile, temperature, and clarity change very little from month to month, which makes it predictable to treat. Surface water is the opposite. Spring runoff carries sediment and agricultural residue; summer brings algae and organic matter; autumn leaf fall introduces tannins; winter ice can concentrate minerals as the volume of flowing water drops.

Neither source is inherently better. What matters is that the treatment method matches the source. A system designed for stable well water will usually underperform on a river supply, and vice versa.

Three core measurements tell you more about a water supply than any marketing claim. If you test nothing else, test these.

pH 6.5–8.5

Balanced pH Range

Neutral to slightly alkaline water offers smooth taste and optimal bodily hydration.

Water below 6.5 is acidic and will corrode pipes and leach metals. Water above 8.5 tastes flat and soapy.

Total Dissolved Solids should retain essential electrolyte minerals without heavy mineral scaling.

Below 50 PPM the water tastes empty. Above 500 PPM it begins to taste salty and leaves scale deposits.

WHAT EACH MINERAL DOES

Not all dissolved solids are equal. Some are beneficial, some are neutral, and a few are worth filtering out entirely.

Calcium & Magnesium

The two primary minerals that give water its body and taste. Both are essential to human nutrition. They are the reason a water with moderate hardness tastes more satisfying than a heavily softened or distilled supply.

Sodium & Potassium

Present in small quantities in most natural water. Sodium becomes a concern above 200 mg/L — usually a sign of road salt or agricultural runoff rather than a natural mineral profile.

Bicarbonates

Bicarbonate is the mineral that buffers pH, keeping water from becoming too acidic or too alkaline. It contributes to what most people describe as a clean, balanced taste.

Lead & Heavy Metals

Should be zero in any drinking supply. Lead, arsenic, and chromium-6 are the three metals most likely to appear from old plumbing or industrial runoff. They are removed only by specific media — not by carbon alone.

Purification goes further. Where does your water come from?

Treated municipal water usually needs filtration only. Well water or a private supply almost always needs purification as well, because the safety of the source cannot be assumed.

Water Filtration Technology

Physical and chemical adsorption methods that improve clarity, taste, and daily safety without removing beneficial minerals.

Filtration is the first line of defence in any water treatment system. It is also the most misunderstood — because "filter" describes three completely different mechanisms, each doing a different job, and none of them interchangeable.

Sediment Pre-Filter

Traps sand, silt, rust particles down to 5 microns, protecting downstream delicate carbon stages.

This is a purely mechanical stage. It does not remove anything dissolved — only particles large enough to be physically caught. Its real job is protecting the stages that follow, because a carbon block clogged with sediment stops working long before its rated life.

Adsorbs volatile organic compounds (VOCs), chlorine disinfectant, and unpleasant chemical odours.

Carbon works by adsorption, not filtration. Contaminants bind chemically to the vast internal surface area of the carbon — a single gram can carry over 500 square metres of surface. This is the stage that removes the taste and smell most people associate with tap water.

Understanding the difference between filtration, adsorption, and ion exchange is the key to understanding what any filter cartridge actually does.

Filtration

A physical barrier with holes smaller than the particles being removed. Water passes through; anything larger stays behind. Used for sediment, rust, and microbial cysts.

MECHANICAL

Adsorption

Contaminants chemically bind to the surface of the filter media rather than being trapped by size. Used for chlorine, VOCs, taste, and odor compounds.

CHEMICAL

Ion Exchange

One charged ion is swapped for another as water passes through resin beads. Used in water softening, and in some heavy-metal removal cartridges.

WHAT FILTRATION DOES NOT REMOVE

A filter cannot do everything. These are the contaminants that require a different treatment stage entirely.

Dissolved Heavy Metals

Lead, arsenic, and chromium-6 pass straight through carbon. They require reverse osmosis or a specialised media cartridge.

Bacteria & Viruses

Carbon blocks do not reliably remove microbiological contaminants. UV treatment or a 0.2-micron membrane is required.

Dissolved Minerals

Calcium and magnesium remain in the water after filtration. This is usually desirable, but softening requires ion exchange.

Nitrates & Phosphates

Common in agricultural runoff. Not removed by carbon. Require reverse osmosis or anion exchange resin.

WHEN TO REPLACE EACH STAGE

Sediment Pre-Filter

Every 3 months, or sooner if visible discoloration appears. A clogged sediment stage starves the carbon stage behind it.

Carbon Block

Every 6 to 12 months, depending on volume and chlorine load. If chlorine taste returns, replace immediately.

The order of stages matters as much as the stages themselves. Sediment must come before carbon, carbon before membrane, membrane before polish. Reverse the sequence and the entire system underperforms — regardless of the quality of the individual cartridges.

Purification is the point where water treatment stops being about taste and starts being about safety. Filtration removes what you can see and smell. Purification removes what you cannot.

Reverse Osmosis (RO) Process

By applying hydraulic pressure across a microscopic 0.0001-micron membrane, water molecules are separated from dissolved solids, nitrates, and fluorides.

The membrane is the core of the system. Water is forced against it under pressure — typically between 40 and 80 PSI for a residential unit — while dissolved contaminants are rejected and flushed away as concentrate. Nothing is chemically added. Nothing is boiled off. The separation is purely physical, and it happens at a scale smaller than any virus.

Ultraviolet Disinfection

RO removes dissolved contaminants. UV removes living ones. Together they cover both categories of risk.

UV treatment works by exposing water to ultraviolet light at a wavelength of 254 nanometres — the specific frequency that damages the DNA of bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. The organisms are not removed from the water. They are rendered incapable of reproducing, which is what makes them safe.

The process adds nothing to the water, changes nothing about its taste or chemistry, and consumes very little electricity. It is the only disinfection method that leaves no residual — which is why it is almost always paired with RO rather than used alone.

Heavy Metals

Lead, arsenic, chromium-6, and mercury are rejected by the RO membrane with over 95% efficiency. These are the most important reason to purify, especially in homes with older plumbing.

Dissolved Salts & Nitrates

Sodium, chloride, nitrate, and sulfate pass through any carbon filter. The RO membrane rejects them entirely — the mechanism behind the system's use in marine and agricultural contexts.

Fluoride & Chloramine

Neither is reliably removed by standard carbon. Both are rejected by RO, which is why reverse osmosis is often chosen by households on municipal supplies as well as wells.

Microbiological Contaminants

Removed in two ways: the membrane itself excludes bacteria and cysts by size, and the UV stage handles anything that slips past. Together they cover both failure modes.

KEEPING THE SYSTEM WORKING

Pre-Filters

Sediment and carbon stages must be replaced every 6 months. A clogged pre-filter starves the RO membrane and shortens its life significantly.

RO Membrane

Every 2 to 3 years, depending on feed-water quality. If TDS rejection drops below 80%, the membrane has failed and requires replacement.

03

UV Bulb

Replace annually. The bulb may still produce visible light after its rated 9,000 hours, but the germicidal output at 254 nm will have fallen below the effective threshold.

PURIFICATION IS A TWO-STAGE COMMITMENT.

Reverse osmosis and UV are not competing technologies. They are complementary stages that solve two entirely different categories of contamination. A system with only one of them will always leave an obvious gap — either living organisms that survive the membrane, or dissolved contaminants that pass through UV untouched.

If your source is a private well, or if your municipal supply runs through older plumbing, a combined RO and UV system is the minimum safe standard. If you are unsure, start with a laboratory test and treat the results as the deciding factor.

The Questions Everyone Asks First

Is tap water safe to drink without a filter?

In many developed municipalities, tap water meets regulatory safety standards. However, aesthetic chlorine taste, aging pipe rust, or localized micro-contaminants often prompt homeowners to add secondary point-of-use filtration.

The safest answer is to read your local water report before deciding. Regulatory compliance is not the same as personal preference, and both matter.

Does filtering remove beneficial minerals?

Standard activated carbon filters do not remove natural minerals like calcium and magnesium. Reverse osmosis systems do strip minerals, which is why many RO units feature remineralization stages.

If mineral retention is a priority, a carbon-only filter is sufficient. If you need RO for safety reasons, add a remineralisation stage afterwards.

How often should water testing be done?

For well water, annual testing for bacteria and nitrates is recommended. Municipal tap users generally test when changing filter units or if taste changes unexpectedly.

A strip test monthly is good practice. A lab test once a year is the minimum for any private supply.

Choosing and Maintaining a System

What is the difference between filtration and purification?

Filtration uses physical and chemical barriers to remove sediment, chlorine, and organic compounds. Purification goes further — using reverse osmosis and UV treatment to remove dissolved metals, salts, and living organisms.

If your source is treated municipal water, filtration is usually enough. If it is a private well, purification is the safer minimum.

How often do filter cartridges need replacing?

Sediment pre-filters every 3 months, carbon blocks every 6 to 12 months, and post-carbon polish annually. RO membranes last 2 to 3 years and UV bulbs should be replaced every 12 months.

These are guidance figures. Actual intervals depend on your feed-water quality and daily usage volume.

Does reverse osmosis waste a lot of water?

Older RO systems wasted up to 4 litres for every litre produced. Modern units with a permeate pump reduce this to roughly 1 to 1.5 litres of concentrate per litre of purified water.

The concentrate is not contaminated — it is simply more concentrated. In many households it can be redirected to garden irrigation.

Can I install a filtration system myself?

Under-sink point-of-use systems can typically be installed by a competent DIYer in under an hour. Whole-house systems and any work involving the main water line usually require a licensed plumber.

Understanding Your Test Results

What TDS level should I aim for?

Between 50 and 300 parts per million is a reasonable target for taste and mineral balance. Below 50 PPM water tends to taste empty; above 500 PPM it can taste salty and leave scale deposits.

Why does my water taste different in summer and winter?

Municipal suppliers often switch between surface water and groundwater sources depending on the season. Temperature also changes the perception of taste — cold water tastes crisper even when the chemistry is identical.

Are home test strips accurate enough?

For pH, hardness, and chlorine, strips are accurate enough for monthly monitoring. They are not reliable for lead, arsenic, or bacterial testing — those require an accredited laboratory.
